Narrated by a child yet to be born, the series True People explores diverse Indigenous childhoods across Brazil, in 13 diffrents ethnic groups. It highlights how these children navigate urban influences and modern technologies while preserving ancestral traditions. Makunáima was silent because his Indigenous relatives had been estranged from their cultures and languages. One day, while flying over a river, he noticed something new in Wararaa’Pay. So Makunáima – who is neither a person nor a god, but can be anything – turned into an animal and went down. There, he found ancestral stories alive in the children’s games, which, through music and dance, reveal a mysterious present, creative and powerful – now shaped by resistance.
Feature film with ancestral narratives set in an Indigenous universe where fantasy and reality coexist, where animals speak with humans, the stars, and the trees. The film, a hybrid musical documentary, stages ancestral stories and follows the encounter between non-Indigenous artists. Brazil, 2025/2026
