The subtle nuances of violence in the daily life of a lower–middle-class family begin to surface when Giselle, a 9-year-old girl, discovers a way to express emotions she cannot communicate verbally. Her fascination with the playful habit of “hitting someone when a Beetle drives by” leads her toward her first understandings of the physical aggressions that shape life both inside and outside the home.
